Educating the next generation: Northern Ireland Housing Executive's innovative approach to tackling damp and mould

M3 and the Northern Ireland Housing Executive are pioneering a creative solution to one of social housing's most pressing challenges - damp, mould and condensation, by taking education directly into primary schools across Northern Ireland through their Hattie the House storytelling initiative.

Damp and mould have emerged as critical issues within the social housing sector, with reports of cases rising significantly in recent years. Poor housing conditions not only damage properties also pose serious health risks, particularly to children, with damp environments linked to respiratory problems and other illnesses. The challenge is compounded by a lack of awareness about prevention and early reporting, making tenant education crucial to protecting both homes and health.

Storytelling

Recognising that today's children are tomorrow's homeowners and tenants, the Housing Executive has launched an innovative pilot project in partnership with Business in the Community Northern Ireland and M3. The initiative uses the engaging story of Hattie the House, created by M3 specifically as an educational tool to explain damp and mould to children. The story follows a talking house that becomes poorly in winter but recovers with proper care, teaching young people in an accessible and engaging format that homes, like people, need attention and maintenance.

Making a Difference

The first session took place at Acorn Integrated Primary School in Carrickfergus, where staff from Estates Services, Learning and Organisational Development, and Human Resources brought the story to life.

Michelle Larkin, Principal Officer for Estates Services, explained the practical focus: "We're in a primary school this morning, to deliver a really important message around how to report cases of damp and mould, and we also discussed ways tenants could help to reduce condensation in their home."

The response from pupils was enthusiastic, with one child eager to share: "I'm going to read it to my mummy, daddy and little sister." By engaging children as ambassadors, the initiative extends its reach into family homes, creating conversations about home care where they're needed most.

Next Steps

Over the next academic year, sessions will roll out to schools across all counties of Northern Ireland, prioritising those with the highest percentage of Housing Executive tenant families. Different staff members will attend each session, helping children understand the various roles that keep homes safe and well-maintained.
